The Giant Edible Gingerbread House - Brunswick Centre WC1

The weather has been awful today. It's been threatening to rain since morning and when it did it come, it came hurtling down!

Thank goodness we were being entertained by actors dressed in absolutely dreadful but hilarious ill fitting pantomime clothes at Brunswick Centre near Russell Square. We were in the queue anxiously awaiting our turn to see and experience and hopefully eat a giant house made entirely out of Gingerbread! I couldn't wait to see it, never mind the children! One of which was filled with trepidation about the idea and the other who was literally drooling at the thought.

To enter, all we had to do was pay a donation to the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

As we entered the building, children and parents were clattering up the stairs to the exit clutching cupcakes, gingerbread & balloons and on seeing this the eyes of my drooling son were literally popping out of his head! He could not wait. Bless him.

We headed down the stairs with the rest of the pint size cake loving mob and their parents, teased all the way by the lead pantomime jester wielding his cane and gently prodding us like cattle; herding us to the door that would finally reveal The Giant Edible Gingerbread House.

After the usual panto ritual with the life-size puppets yelling "Are you ready to see the giant edible gingerbread house?" and the mob offering muted mumbling and unenthusiastic hand clapping. There followed the inevitable "COME ON! ARE YOU READY TO SEE THE GIANT EDIBLE GINGERBREAD HOUSE?" and we obediently gave rapturous whoops and applause etc etc, so all was revealed.

It was definitely a house and it was made of gingerbread in the sense that it had large gingerbread biscuits dangling from it but it wasn't GIANT. From a child's perspective it probably was and to be honest it didn't really matter because the idea engaged every child around me, but the adults were clearly a bit miffed apart from me, I fancied moving in!!

They all sat neatly crossed legged in the cupcake lawn with marsh mellow flowers waiting politely before being giving permission to help themselves to a cake (just one mind!!!). I am talking about the children by the way; although one parent, I'm sure a child at heart,  did have to be ejected from the candy coated garden for pinching a cake! Naughty, naughty!

After 20 minutes of relatively entertaining chatter from our hosts we were all invited to do a bit of a hand jiving (don't ask!) which culminated in an explosion of popcorn from the chimney - YAY!

We were sent off clutching gingerbread (husband liked it, I didn't so much) around to the back of the house where we were welcomed by Mrs Ditzy another character who got the children to create and draw a story which I have to say was quite good. Then the little ones were invited to decorate their biscuits.

What can I say, all in all I was relieved that we were out of the rain and the twins were being entertained.

But as far as a family experience goes I would say say. Kids 1, Parents 0

Mama xx
